Evidence-based design has been remarkably successful in helping billions of dollars of healthcare facilities become more patient-centered, safer and better organized. Healthcare is now seeking to reinforce these gains, while facing multiple challenges such as accelerating cost and revenue pressures and the desire to improve health and wellness. There is an opportunity for healthcare designers and researchers to work closely with providers to create integrated systems that include re-imagined physical settings, new mobile technologies and re-defined care processes. This talk explores emerging problems and forces at play in healthcare that can be mediated or alleviated by the built environment, research findings that can help address these problems and how multidisciplinary collaborations are addressing them through focusing on patient experience and safety, managing chronic disease and improving staff experience and work process.
